In March, we translated an article "Heat Stress Management in Sows", which introduced HOTHOG, a mobile phone APP developed by Dr. Jay S. Johnson's team at the University of Missouri using the latest research results to reflect the thermal comfort status of pregnant sows. It supports the evaluation of the thermal comfort status of pregnant sows at different stages (divided into early, middle and late stages) based on local weather forecast data, and can also input temperature, humidity and pregnant sow stage to obtain thermal comfort evaluation (divided into cool, comfortable, warm, mild, moderate and severe).
It can be downloaded and installed on Apple App Store and Google Play. The following is the interface of this APP. First, the physiological and behavioral performance of pregnant pigs under different thermal comfort states is introduced.
Physiological and behavioral changes
Cool
Blood vessels constrict to reduce heat loss. Move closer to other companions to prevent heat loss. Increase feed intake and promote metabolic heat production
Comfortable
No foreseeable physiological and behavioral changes
Warm
Blood vessels dilate to promote heat loss, no obvious behavioral changes
Mild heat stress
Skin blood vessels dilate to promote body heat loss. Increased breathing rate to promote body heat loss. Reduced activity, mostly lying down to rest
Moderate heat stress
Skin blood vessels dilate to promote body heat loss. Increased breathing rate to promote body heat loss. Body temperature begins to rise. Reduced activity, mostly lying down to rest
Severe heat stress
Skin blood vessels dilate to promote body heat loss. Increased breathing rate promotes heat loss from the body
Body temperature rises rapidly, resulting in a high fever
Increased water intake
·Lie flat to increase contact with the ground to dissipate heat
Reduced activity
To reduce metabolic heat production, feed intake is greatly reduced
Management plan
Barn management:
Ensure vent fans are clean to maintain good air circulation quality
Ensure that the heater can operate correctly and safely
Install heat shields on vent fans in summer
Reduce ventilation and maintain humidity between 55% and 75% In naturally ventilated pig houses, lower curtains to reduce heat loss Observe pig behavior and note that pigs are not lying together with their companions
In transportation:
Provide additional bedding for pigs in the transport vehicle.
Close all vents in the transport vehicle,
Try to reduce humidity in the transport vehicle and on the pigs
Use closed loading and unloading channels to reduce contact between pigs and cold air.
Reduce the number of pigs loaded in each batch,
If you must stop during transportation, monitor the vehicle and adjust the transport vehicle baffles to prevent condensation.
Comfort
Barn Management:
Check vents and fans daily for proper operationObserve pigs’ behavior to ensure they are resting comfortablyTransport
·No special measures are required.
Warmth
Barn Management:
Observe pigs’ behavior to ensure they are not crowded together with their companions
Monitor water intake and observe increases in water intake associated with heat stress. Ensure all pigs have access to cold water. Ensure Ventilation Systems and fans are functioning properly and adjust to a comfortable temperature for different production stages Ensure fans are clean as dust can affect fan efficiency
Remove heat shields from all ventilation fans
In naturally ventilated barns, lower curtains to reduce heat radiationTransport
Open all vents on transport vehicles. Adjust loading by reducing the number of pigs per load
Arrange transport at a cooler time of day (early morning or evening)
Minimize stops to increase air circulation and reduce heat buildup.
Do not use straw as bedding
What functions should a better environmental control APP have? I think a better environmental control APP should have the following functions
1. Question and answer function With the current development of AI technology, the corresponding question and answer agent based on a specialized knowledge base will become more and more mature. The previous attempt at AI pig house control was an attempt.
2. Thermal comfort assessment of animals of different types and stages (similar to HOTHOG)
3. Assessment methods and calculation tools for air tightness of livestock and poultry houses (similar to Poultry411)
4. Tunnel ventilation design, it is best to be able to do equipment selection (including fans, wet curtains, air inlet windows, etc.)
