Technology-Driven, Southeast Asia-Adapted: A Systematic Solution for Model A Layer Cages

Southeast Asia’s layer industry is moving fast from backyard flocks to automated farms. But the climate there—heat, humidity, salt—kills ordinary cages in a few years. The A‑type (stepped) cage is popular because it breathes well and works with open houses. Yet to actually survive and perform in this region, you need to rethink materials, dimensions, automation, and certifications from the ground up. Here is what that looks like in practice.
Corrosion protection is the make‑or‑break issue
Skip cold galvanising—it fails too quickly. For Southeast Asia, hot‑dip galvanising is the minimum. Use Q235A high‑carbon steel wire, cold‑drawn for strength and springiness. The coating should be at least 85 µm thick. For the frame, 275 g/m² galvanised sheet, stamped and formed, is standard. If the site is near the coast or has particularly aggressive manure gas, upgrade to an aluminium‑zinc alloy coating (≥10% Al, ≥90% Zn). With these treatments, you get 15–20 years of service life. Without them, expect 3–4 years at best.
Get the dimensions right for the birds and the air
The stepped design already helps airflow. But the tier height matters—48 to 52 cm per tier gives hens room to stand and stretch while keeping the stack compact. A typical single cage is 1950–2150 mm long, 350–420 mm wide, and 380–410 mm high. Stock at 3–5 hens per compartment, which works out to 430–500 cm² per bird. A common block is 4 tiers × 8 sections = 128 hens per group.
For many farms, open houses with two floors work well: manure drops straight to the ground floor, and the heat dries it out fast. You only clean out at the end of the cycle. Cage frames should be modular—bolt together on site, no welding mess.
Automation that actually cuts labour
Labour is getting expensive, and farms are getting bigger. A full A‑type system for this market should include:
• Feeding: Trolley or chain feeders with even‑spread distributors. Silos can be 11.2‑tonne galvanised units.
• Drinking: Round or square pipes (2.5 mm wall) with stainless nipples, plus inline filters and medicators.
• Egg collection: Longitudinal plus cross belts, with gentle slopes to keep cracks down.
• Manure removal: Scraper or belt conveyors. In the open‑floor design, you can skip the scraper altogether.
• Climate control: Intelligent controllers for temperature, humidity, and ventilation. Use EC fans with permanent‑magnet motors—they save about 20% energy over conventional fans.
Certifications are not optional for export
If you are shipping into Southeast Asia, you need ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment), and often CE (safety). Inspectors will check the 85 µm coating thickness and noise levels below 65 dB. Also worth noting: China just released a new group standard (effective January 2026) for installing stacked Layer Cages—it affects how you anchor and align the system, so your installation crew should be up to speed.
What works in the field
A few real projects show the way. In Cambodia, near Phnom Penh, a farm runs A‑type cages with full hot‑dip galvanising and 275 g/m² frames, plus automated feed, egg collection, and manure removal—handling the wet season without rust issues. In Indonesia, a 4‑tier A‑type system uses the same galvanising approach and has cut daily labour by half. In Thailand, one operation went with a 4‑tier by 4‑row fully automated stack, and their climate controller is tuned specifically to local conditions, not a generic preset.

Adapting A‑type cages for Southeast Asia is not about picking a standard catalogue model. It is about specifying the right coating, adjusting dimensions for airflow and welfare, bolting on the right automation modules, and making sure your certifications are in order. Get these four pieces right, and the equipment will last, perform, and sell in a competitive market. Get any one wrong, and you will be replacing rusted steel or struggling with labour costs within a few seasons.
