How to effectively reduce egg breakage in caged laying hen systems? Egg breakage is one of the major economic losses in laying hen production, often caused by a combination of factors including nutrition, management, equipment, and the birds themselves. Qingdao Puhui Agriculture and Animal Husbandry has developed a systematic solution:

1. Nutrition and Water Management: Building a Strong Eggshell Foundation
Eggshell quality is directly dependent on the nutrients the hens consume.

Calcium and Phosphorus Balance and Supplementation: The primary component of the eggshell is calcium carbonate. During the laying period, the calcium content of the diet should be between 3.5% and 4.0%. Phosphorus is also critical, with available phosphorus levels maintained at 0.35% to 0.4%. An imbalance in the calcium-phosphorus ratio can severely impact eggshell strength. It is recommended to supplement the feed with large-particle limestone or oyster shells during the afternoon feed, as eggshell calcification primarily occurs at night, when calcium released slowly from the intestine can be more efficiently utilized.

Water Supply: Water is the most essential component of eggs. Any dehydration will immediately lead to a decline in eggshell quality. Ensure that water lines are unobstructed, water pressure is appropriate, and nipple drinkers are providing sufficient water. Especially during hot weather, pay close attention to the flock's water intake.

Key Trace Elements and Vitamins: Vitamin D3 is a key carrier for calcium absorption and metabolism. Deficiency can lead to thin and brittle eggshells. Manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn) are essential trace elements for the eggshell matrix and are crucial for eggshell toughness. Ensure adequate and balanced addition of these nutrients.

2. Equipment Design and Maintenance: Optimizing the Egg "Layer Pathway"
Cage equipment is the primary cause of mechanical damage.

Cage Floor Slope and Material: The cage floor slope is crucial, with the optimal range typically being 7-9 degrees. Too little slope can cause eggs to become trapped and easily pecked or stepped on by the hens. Too much slope can cause eggs to roll too quickly and break when they hit the egg collection belt. The cage floor wire should be smooth, burr-free, and free of rust. The diameter should be appropriate (usually 2.5-3.0 mm recommended) to provide a smooth rolling path for the eggs.

Egg collection system: The egg collection belt should be designed to minimize collisions during collection. Ensure the belt runs smoothly and at an appropriate speed, and smoothly connects to the end of the cage floor, avoiding steps or gaps. Cushioning pads (such as plastic or rubber) on the egg collection belt can effectively reduce the impact force between eggs and metal baffles or other eggs.

Regular inspection and maintenance: Establish a strict equipment inspection and maintenance system. Regularly inspect the cage floor for deformed or broken wires, the egg collection belt for proper tightness and damage, and all joints for smoothness. Even a small burr or bump can be a potential "egg breaker."

3. Feeding and management: Create a stable, low-stress environment. Chicken health and behavior directly impact egg quality.

Reducing stress: Any stress (such as startle, noise, sudden feed changes, immunization, and sudden changes in temperature and humidity) can affect the chicken's endocrine system and calcium absorption and metabolism, leading to an increase in "stress-induced egg breakage." Maintaining a stable and quiet chicken house environment and standardized operating procedures is crucial.

Lighting Management: Stable and adequate lighting is crucial for maintaining consistent egg production. Sudden changes in lighting duration or intensity can disrupt the egg-laying cycle, potentially leading to eggshell quality issues and even decreased egg production.

Cull unproductive birds promptly: There will always be a proportion of birds in a flock that molt prematurely or do not lay eggs. These birds, active in the cage but not laying, consume resources and increase the risk of other eggs being stepped on or pecked. These unproductive birds should be identified and eliminated promptly.

4. Collection and Handling: The Last Line of Defense
Increase Egg Collection Frequency: Especially during peak egg-laying hours (9:00 AM to 1:00 PM), increasing egg collection frequency (recommended at least 3-4 times per day) can significantly reduce the time eggs spend in the cage, thereby reducing the risk of being pecked, stepped on, and bumped into each other.

Handle with care: Train workers to handle eggs with care when picking and handling them. Use well-designed egg trays and packaging to avoid excessive vibration and impact during transportation.

Reducing the egg breakage rate requires a systematic approach and continuous optimization across three dimensions: nutrition, equipment, and management. Through meticulous daily management, regular equipment maintenance, and scientific nutrition adjustments, the egg breakage rate can be controlled to an ideal level of 1% or even lower, significantly improving the economic benefits of the farm.
